BACKGROUND

The origins of Japanese whisky remain shrouded in mystery to this day; however, it is believed to have started in the 1850s as a side project for sake breweries. It wasn’t until 1923 when Shinjiro Torii and Masataka Taketsuru created the iconic Yamazaki distillery, which has since led to Japanese whiskies gaining international acclaim and consistently being ranked amongst the best in the world. It was in late 2000 when Japanese whisky brands gained the attention from the international market honouring Nikka 10y Yoichi with “the best”.
